Transcript
KESSLER: Recording. Eighteenth of September, intake, subject one one four. Say your name for the tape. ALDAINE: Odile Aldaine. KESSLER: And you understand what we do here. ALDAINE: You put me in a bed under a coloured light and see whether I sleep. KESSLER: That is a fair summary. Eight hours, no more. You can stop on any night, at any hour, by saying so out loud. There is somebody watching the whole time, so you will be heard. ALDAINE: How long has it been since you slept properly, doctor? KESSLER: [pause] That is not on the form. ALDAINE: It was not a form question. KESSLER: [pause] Four years. ALDAINE: Then we are the same, and one of us is getting paid. KESSLER: [a short laugh] One of us is getting paid. ALDAINE: My sister thinks this is a bad idea. KESSLER: Your sister may be right. Does she know you have come? ALDAINE: Wren knows everything about eleven minutes after it happens. It is her whole personality. KESSLER: Then I will not have to explain myself to her later. ALDAINE: You will. You absolutely will. [end of recording]
