Staff photograph, summer 1985
Nineteen people on the front steps. Four faces have been scored out.
Full text as recovered
Nineteen staff on the front steps in the rain, squinting, arranged in three rows
the way institutional photographs always are.
The names are typed on a slip gummed to the mount. Reading them against the
faces, four have been gone over with a ballpoint pen until the emulsion gave out:
Back row, third from left — M. VANCE
Back row, seventh — T. KESSLER
Middle row, second — A. REEVE
Front row, fourth — R. PALLISER
The four people who were on shift on the night of 12 November 1986 are the four
people somebody tried to remove from this photograph.
They were not scratched out in anger. The strokes are even and unhurried and they
stop exactly at the edge of each face.
