Room 3 wall, pencil

Dated: undated
Kind: Photograph
Chapter: Chapter One: The Nightwatch Ledger
Status: Optional — not required to finish the chapter

Four words, written at sitting height, until the pencil ran out.

Full text as recovered

The wall of room 3, photographed under a penlight, at a height of about
thirty inches from the floor — the height of somebody's hand if they were
sitting on the floor with their back to the bed frame.

Four words, written and rewritten until the graphite gave out and the last
dozen repetitions are just the impression of a point in soft plaster:

        I AM NOT ASLEEP
        I AM NOT ASLEEP
        I AM NOT ASLEEP
        I AM NOT ASLEEP
        I AM NOT ASLEEP

The handwriting is steady all the way down. It does not deteriorate. Whoever
wrote this was not distressed and was not tiring.

They were being accurate.
